projek sentosa
Funded by Yinson Holdings Berhad under the Yinson4Youth CSR programme, Projek Sentosa is a community-based initiative to identify the mental health needs of the Orang Asli and co-develop culturally appropriate interventions to support their wellbeing.
The project began with groundwork to shape culturally sensitive engagement, followed by direct conversations with the community that informed the development of a bilingual Mental Wellbeing toolkit.
Literature review + consultations with experts
To develop culturally grounded focus group questions based on mental health and community development best practices.
Focus group discussions in Orang Asli villages
Held in Kampung Jambu, Kelinsing, Sg Belankan, Bukit Jenuk, and Broga (in collaboration with Hospital Orang Asli Gombak).

Interviews with Orang Asli university students
To complement community perspectives with lived experiences of Orang Asli youth in higher education.

Toolkit development
Findings from discussions and interviews were used to create a bilingual Mental Wellbeing Toolkit tailored to the Orang Asli context.

Pilot intervention with Orang Asli women in Pekan, Pahang
Toolkit activities were tried and improved. Participants found the sessions both joyful and educational.

Capacity building workshop with Orang Asli youth and children
Held in Kampung Sungai Kurau, Pulau Carey (with student group EmpowerED) to build mental health literacy and emotional resilience.

Sepi studio
Sepi is Nyawa's clinically informed art therapy studio, where our commitment to evidence-based treatment meets our passion for holistic wellness.

255 youths received free art therapy by licensed mental health professionals.

2-hour group sessions using different mediums (e.g. Clay, Journalling, Music) delivered to 160 youths.

1.5-hour individual sessions dedicated to youth with mental health conditions from marginalized communities.

insiatif menyantuni
Since 2021, Nyawa's Inisiatif Menyantuni has provided free mental health screening and subsidized therapy to those who cannot afford professional mental health services.

The demand for Inisiatif Menyantuni was high; each wave of new slots were fully booked in less than
48 hours.

3 waves completed​
Each wave was 5 - 10 months long. After each wave, feedback and clinical outcomes were evaluated to improve the initiative.

4 partnerships established
Our partners included the Ministry of Health, AWAS, Aloe Mind, and Mentem Psychological Services.

83 therapists onboarded
Therapists consisted of registered clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and counsellors. Trainee therapists were allocated to less severe clients and supervised by senior therapists.

802 sessions conducted
Each client received 4-10 sessions, depending on their clinical needs.
